1 The coconut palm (Cocos nucifera linn.) is the most useful palm in the world and it play a significant role in the agrarian economy of India.
2 Cocos nucifera is a large palm, growing up to 30 m (98 ft) tall, with pinnate leaves 4–6 m (13–20 ft) long, and pinnae 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) long; old leaves break away cleanly, leaving the trunk smooth.
3 A full-sized coconut weighs about 1.4 kg (3.1 lb). It takes around 6,000 full-grown coconuts to produce one tonne of copra.
4 Roots are usually less than about 75 mm (3 inches) in diameter and uniformly thick from the tree trunk to the root tip.
5 The coconut palm thrives on sandy soils and is highly tolerant of salinity.It prefers areas with abundant sunlight and regular rainfall (1,500–2,500 mm [59–98 in] annually)and daily temperature is above 12–13 °C (54–55 °F) for every day of the year.
6 The copra and coconut oil, widely used in the manufacture of soaps, hair oil, cosmetics and other industrial products.The tender nut supplies coconut water, a popular thirst quencher of health and hygienic value.
7 Preparation of Land and Planting:
  • In loamy soils with low water table, a pit size of 1mx1mx1m is recommended.
  • In laterite soils with underlying rocks, take larger pits of size 1.2m x 1.2m x 1.2m.
  • In sandy soils the size need not exceed 0.75m x 0.75m x 0.75 m.

    Areas of Plantation
